CO-OWNER/SALON DIRECTOR
Matty spent nearly 5 of his 16 years of hairdressing in schooling and apprenticeships. As a Pivot Point International Almunus, he apprenticed at the former Red 7 Salon (Chicago/Evanston). During that time, he was extensively trained at the former Wella Institute (Chicago). After moving back to Indiana, Matty advanced his career at a former Griffith salon, during which time he worked for JOICO International, and later, Schwarzkopf Professional. He has taken a variety of cutting courses with world-renowned educators including: Sally Rogerson Education, Mazella & Partners and Jack Bayne (formerly of SACO).
Matty (& Stephanie) moved to Ireland in January 2017, worked in high end salons across the Country, gaining new experiences and exposure to Irish, British and European hairdressing. Upon returning home to Indiana in November 2018, he and Stephanie worked hard to purchase the salon in October of 2019…founding YUGEN. Matty is known for precision haircutting and dimensional hair coloring – each being tailored to create a look specific to the needs and wants of his clients.
STEPHANIE BACKUS
CO-OWNER/MASSAGE DIRECTOR
Stephanie has been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 2013 and is very passionate about helping others achieve a better sense of well-being. While living abroad, Stephanie expanded upon her modalities, learning new approaches from Physiotherapists. In 2021, she began the study of Reiki with the instructors of A Life Path and attained the “Master Teacher Reiki IV” certification. She understands that all people have different circumstances and specializes in unique and individualized treatment plans, catering to the specific needs of each client.
Clients depart from Stephanie with a renewed feeling, often finding relief from various musculoskeletal issues, as well as recommend tips and tools for self-care.
Stephanie strongly believes in the healing benefits of Massage Therapy, as well as Reiki, for the mind, body and soul.

SENIOR STYLIST
Irene has been an industry professional since 2010. After graduation, she began a year-long internship at a local high-end salon. In September of 2012 she co-owned a salon with family and managed its daily operations. That salon would eventually become YUGEN – a salon she loves and considers it her home away from home. As a mom, Irene works a part-time schedule and continues to maintain a loyal following – always striving to give each client an awesome experience!
Irene holds continuing education in high regard. She has taken color and cutting classes with both JOICO and Paul Mitchell. In 2020, she began a training program with Matty to continue to refine her skills.
From short women’s creative cuts to beautiful blondes, Irene has the capability to exceed your expectations!

POLICIES
All Hair / Chemical Services
All services are guaranteed for ONE WEEK. Chemical services are guaranteed for the original service. If a new service is requested, you will be charged for that service. Our services are guaranteed as long as you care for your hair at home using professional products purchased at our salon. If our professional recommendations are not followed, we no longer guarantee the integrity of your hair or the longevity of your color.
Pricing
Many of our services are listed “starting at” prices. It is at the discretion of the service provider and the salon to finalize what the price will be. It is our responsibility to communicate an estimated cost prior to starting the service. Pricing is evaluated by the head of hair and not by the age of a person, including children. In circumstances where it has been awhile since your last visit, color prices will be more due to the extra color that will be needed to provide the service. If corrective color is needed your service provider will consult with you and let you know the price.
Gift Certificates, eGift Cards and Prepaid Services
There is an expiration date of one year from the purchase date. If there is a no call/no show or same day cancelation on an appointment scheduled with a Gift Certificate, eGift Card or Prepaid service there will be a fee charged which is subject to the full value of the service booked in for.
Clients
Due to our limited space, clients may be asked to wait in the car until we are ready to welcome them. Clients are not allowed to have guests with them. Only clients receiving services may be in the salon. Anyone not receiving services may be asked to leave. Upon arrival you will be asked to put on a mask and sanitize your hands.
Children
Our salon caters primarily to adults. Our goal is to make a relaxing and enjoyable visit for all clients. Unattended children are not allowed on the salon floor–both for safety, as well as respect for the salon. Please be considerate to other clients being serviced because everyone is entitled to an enjoyable visit.
Mobile Phones
We strive to maintain a relaxing and fun atmosphere. We kindly ask you to refrain from taking phone calls while you are with your service provider. If you would like to take a call, please be mindful of others. We do not allow the use of FaceTime or speakerphone. Please keep your phone on silent / vibrate and help us maintain the atmosphere we have created.
Late Arrivals
If you know you will be late, please kindly inform us. If you are tardy more than 15 minutes, it is at the discretion of the salon and the service provider to accept or decline your appointment. Likewise, we will also try our best to notify you with plenty of time if we will be tardy for your appointment.
Cancellations
While we understand any extenuating circumstances, a 24 hour notice to cancel or reschedule is necessary to help us maintain proper functionality of the salon. It also affords us the opportunity to fill any gaps in future services. After 2 no call/no show appointments, you will be required to prepay for all future services.
Returned Checks
A $20.00 fee will be applied to all returned checks. This will be added to your account and must be paid in full at the end of your next service. If your check is returned, we will no longer accept checks from you.
These Policies are in addition to our updated protocols for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), Social Distancing, Health Screening and Sanitation.
